Atomic Structure of Grain Boundaries and Intergranular Segregation

چکیده
— Some Important aspects of the atomic structure of grain boundaries in pure metals, in particular the structural model of general grain boundaries and the multiplicity of structures, are discussed first. An empirical scheme for the desciption of atomic interactions in alloys is then outlined. General, structure independent, properties of segregation are examined in the framework of this scheme. Results of the atomistic calculations of grain boundaries with a low as well as a gradually increasing concentration of impurities are then presented. The relationship between the boundary structure and the propensity to segregation together with the structural changes invoked by segregation, are discussed in the light of these calculations.

Effect of grain boundary character on segregation-induced structural transitions
Segregation-induced structural transitions in metallic grain boundaries are studied with hybrid atomistic Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics simulations using Cu-Zr as a model system, with a specific emphasis on understanding the effect of grain boundary character. With increasing global composition, the six grain boundary types chosen for this paper first form ordered complexions, with the local s...

We present an experimental model system that enables quantitative assessment of intergranular exchange coupling in CoCrPt-oxide perpendicular magnetic recording media. A thin film structure consisting of a high coercivity CoPt unicrystal layer and a lower coercivity CoPt layer separated by a thin oxide interlayer is used to model perpendicularly magnetized grains separated by oxide grain bounda...
متن کاملGrain-boundary engineering markedly reduces susceptibility to intergranular hydrogen embrittlement in metallic materials
The feasibility of using ‘‘grain-boundary engineering” techniques to reduce the susceptibility of a metallic material to intergranular embrittlement in the presence of hydrogen is examined. Using thermomechanical processing, the fraction of ‘‘special” grain boundaries was increased from 46% to 75% (by length) in commercially pure nickel samples. In the presence of hydrogen concentrations betwee...

Solute/impurity segregation and precipitation at grain boundaries (GBs) in a nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steel were investigated using laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT): RPV surveillance test specimens irradiated in a commercial nuclear reactor to neutron doses of 0.83 © 1019 n·cm12 (low-dose) and 5.1 © 1019 n·cm12 (high-dose), corresponding to in-service exposure of 35 and 3...
متن کاملAtomically ordered solute segregation behaviour in an oxide grain boundary
Grain boundary segregation is a critical issue in materials science because it determines the properties of individual grain boundaries and thus governs the macroscopic properties of materials. Recent progress in electron microscopy has greatly improved our understanding of grain boundary segregation phenomena down to atomistic dimensions, but solute segregation is still extremely challenging t...
